Dior sparks outrage over underwhelming $3,500 advent calendar
Dior's $3,500 advent calendar, which primarily includes sample-sized scents and soap bars, has angered the cosmetics industry.
It follows a series of videos Jackie Aina, a well-known beauty influencer, made on her TikTok account showing how to unbox the 24-day calendar.
Aina initially had a favourable opinion of the device and praised its general design.
The advent calendar was made in partnership with French artist Pietro Ruffo and was modelled after the Dior boutique located at 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris.
However, her perspective shifted when she realised that many of the boxes had miniature candles and perfumes.
The breaking point was when Aina opened the box dated 6 December, which was empty save for a lid for one of the candles discovered in a previous package.
A single coaster was included in a later box as well.
Her fans called out the unusual assortment of objects in the films, which have received over 37 million views.
"This woman paid $3500 for a Dior advent calendar, and you're telling me one day had a candle, and another day had the lid to the candle? One person remarked, "This is really ridiculous.
The lid getting its own day is flooring me, another person said.
Equally damaging was Aina's judgement.
The influencer claimed in a another video that "each piece is supposedly worth $145."
I firmly believe that the fragrance samples are not worth $145.
Sorry, the soaps are not the $145 soaps.
Beauty lovers have previously expressed their displeasure with expensive advent calendars.
The $825 2021 calendar released by high-end cosmetics brand Chanel drew criticism on social media.
A dust bag, flip pages, and branded stickers were included in the package, which caused many customers to feel undercharged considering the high price.
Kylie Jenner was also charged with overcharging customers US$117 in October of this year for what was essentially a cardboard box.
The three-piece Birthday Lip Crayon Set and Lip Gloss Set from Kylie Cosmetics were included in the $175 Birthday PR Box.
On the other hand, the company's Birthday Bundle, which includes the identical Birthday Lip Crayon and Lip Gloss Set, is offered on kyliecosmetics.com for $58.
